Sheriff's Fees - Civil Office

ALL SERVICES RELATED TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, SEXUAL ASSAULT, OR ANY OTHER FORM OF PROTECTION ORDER ARE FEE EXEMPT, AND JCSO WILL NEITHER REQUEST NOR ACCEPT PAYMENT FOR THESE MATTERS.

CIVIL OFFICE SHERIFF’S FEES & FEE DEPOSITS

State Law requires the Sheriff’s Office to collect fees for certain services; the amount charged for each type of service is set by the Board of County Commissioners.  (RCW 36.18.040).  The current fee schedule took effect March 1, 2016, following approval by the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners on November 23, 2015. The Fee Schedule was adopted via Ordinance 09-1123-15. The fee scheduled was updated on January 1st 2022 in accordance with Ordinance 09-1123-15.

The Civil Office is prohibited from utilizing public funds to defray the costs of private litigation (RCW 36.18.040). Under no circumstances will the staff of the Civil Office alter the fee scale contained herein and established by the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners.

This page only lists fees and fee deposits.  For information regarding how to submit a civil case for processing by the JCSO Civil Unit, please refer to our Intake Sheets Page

The Civil Office accepts cash, cashiers’ checks, and money orders.  The Civil Office may, on a case-by-case basis, accept business checks from verifiable law firms and other similar businesses.  The Civil Office cannot accept debit or credit cards, electronic payments, or personal checks.

OVER / UNDER POLICY

Beginning with cases accepted on or after January 1, 2018, the Civil Office has adopted an Over / Under Policy consistent with the Jefferson County Revenue / Cash Handling Policy & Procedure manual.

The Civil Office will not bill customers for outstanding fees on a case totaling less than $7.00; the Civil Office also will not refund customers for deposit balances of less than $7.00.  For example, if a customer deposits $60.00 on a case, and JCSO bills $65.00 in fees, we would not send a bill for the $5.00 overage; similarly, if a customer deposits $60.00 on a case and JCSO bills $55.00 in fees, we would not send a refund for the $5.00 underage.

ADVANCED FEE DEPOSITS

JCSO requires a deposit prior to accepting service. For general service of process, the deposit varies based on the location of the person to be served; for civil cases (such as conducting evictions or executing on other Writs), the deposit varies based on the type of case.  There are no fees for the service of protective orders of any kind, including temporary protective orders, Denial Orders with a petition for protective orders.

The Sheriff's Office will be charging for: motion to modify, motion to terminate, or something where a hearing has been requested.

If our fees exceed the deposit, you will be invoiced for the balance; if our fees are less than the deposit, you will be mailed a refund upon the conclusion of the services.
