Volunteers in Police Service Program

Purpose

The Jefferson County Sheriff’ Office (JCSO) Volunteers in Police Service Program enables citizens to contribute their time and talents to support specific law enforcement responsibilities. Prior experience in law enforcement is not required and a diversity of backgrounds is encouraged.  Volunteers are trained for specific assignments.

Volunteer services may include JCSO administrative support, home security education, vacation home checks, radar trailer, boating safety enforcement, special community events, and a range of other functions.  These support services are invaluable to free law enforcement staff to concentrate on other assigned duties.

Volunteer time is unpaid. JCSO Volunteers express personal satisfaction with the camaraderie and opportunity to serve the community and public safety members directly in this program.

Volunteer in Police Service Program applications are available at the front desk of the JCSO office in Port Hadlock during normal business hours. Volunteer applications are reviewed and confirmed by JCSO in accordance with local, state, and federal requirements.

Vacation Checks

Vacation checks are a courtesy service supported by the JCSO Volunteer in Police Service Program and provided to residents of unincorporated Jefferson County free of charge upon approval. This service is available only to full time Jefferson County residents for a period up to two weeks per approved application. Volunteers, when available, will conduct brief random external site checks of home residences. Keep in mind that JCSO volunteers are unpaid and volunteer their time as available. Because of this, JCSO cannot guarantee occurrence, timeliness, frequency of vacation checks, nor are we liable for the security of your residence/property during this time.

This service should not be considered a substitute for proper security measures such as a monitored alarm/surveillance system/watchful neighbors. Additional requirements are included on the request form. To request a vacation check for your personal residence, please print the Vacation Check Request (PDF) and mail the completed document to the address listed on the form. Request forms are also available at the front desk of the JCSO office in Port Hadlock during normal business hours.
