Substance Abuse Prevention

The Substance Abuse Prevention Program works in collaboration with community partners to prevent the initiation of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. By providing education and support to individuals, school, families and the community, the Prevention Team leads the community strategic planning process, which includes policy level change, environmental strategies, and direct service.

Prevention Philosophy

JCPH Prevention Programs use a "risk and protective factor" approach as the cornerstone of its efforts to prevent alcohol and other drug abuse. Risk factors are personal, family or community characteristics that increase the likelihood an individual will use alcohol or other drugs. Protective factors are similar characteristics that help insulate individuals from substance-abusing behaviors. These include individual protective characteristics, bonding to family, school, community and/or peers, and healthy beliefs and clear standards for behavior.
