Jefferson County participates in the National Flood
Insurance Program (NFIP), which allows property owners in unincorporated
Jefferson County to obtain flood insurance for development within mapped
floodplains.
In 2018, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) completed their update of a report entitled Flood Insurance Study for
Jefferson County, Washington and Incorporated Areas (FIS), which served as
a basis for updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for Jefferson
County. In December 2018, FEMA confirmed that the FIS and the FIRMs are
final for Jefferson County and stated that the county must begin using these
documents on June 7, 2019.
To comply with this requirement, Jefferson County is
in the process of updating the flood damage prevention ordinance (as codified
in Chapter 15.15 of the Jefferson County Code). This update is intended
to make the ordinance consistent with FEMA requirements.
