[ARCHIVED] Cape George Trailhead Park Forestry Project

A forestry project will begin on February 15, 2021 at the Cape George Trailhead County Park. The project will be done in sections, beginning with the northwest section.  The Larry Scott Trail and parking area will remain open, but all side trails will be closed and clearly marked. For your safety please respect the closure.

The purpose of the project is to reduce fire risk and increase forest health. This project is selective thinning to reduce tree density, not clear cutting.

Selective thinning increases spacing between trees allowing more sun and nutrients to reach the forest floor nurturing the native trees in our park, Madrone, Cedar, Hemlock, Pine, Cherry, Maple, Aspen, Douglas Fir and others. Not only do existing trees grow larger, but this also enables understory plants like rhododendron and salal to thrive, reducing fire danger.

Selected trees will be removed from the site and used for firewood, paper pulp, and energy. The project will be done with specialized machinery and professional crews with chainsaws.

For more information please call Jefferson County Parks and Recreation at 360-385-9160 or see www.countyrec.com.
